A Member Organization Dedicated to Health and Wellness

Lend Your Helping Hands Locally

In addition to making monetary donations to local organizations, which is always important, we can get involved with the organization personally. In Metro Denver there are many governmental and non-profit organizations that can use hands-on-help; we can pick and choose what fits our time allotment and temperament.

Denver, Colorado has an organization called Metro Volunteers that will help identify volunteer opportunities. Perhaps your neighborhood has a non-profit organization designed to improve neighbor and community relationships? My Sunnyside neighborhood has SUNI, and the Highlands neighborhood has HUNI.

There are many search engines on the internet, but only one that I know of that gives to charitable organizations for every search that is done. Good Search can be used for any kind of online search, as well as looking for volunteer opportunities in your hometown.

It doesn't matter which Denver neighborhood you live in, if you are a good neighbor. Being a good neighbor means respecting your neighbors and your neighborhood. What can you do to add to your neighborhood? Do you need to start recycling or plant a couple of trees to add to the oxygen supply and beautification of the neighborhood? Clean up your alley, mind the trash bins, and report and clean graffiti off your property.

Being a good neighbor means extending yourself out to your neighbors. Stop by and introduce yourself. Give them your phone number and let them know they can call on you if they need help or have you keep an eye on their home when they go out of town or collect their mail. Perhaps you have a garden in your back yard that is bountiful, wouldn't it be nice to share some fresh veggies with your neighbor?

Sitting on the front porch is an old time custom we still enjoy. Having a cup of coffee or tea in the morning or a cool beverage in the late afternoon on the front porch is grand. Resting while we watch the industry of the bees in the garden, sharing some time in conversation, or waving to the neighbors walking by can help soothe daily stresses. We even wave to those we don't know in passing cars and hope they maintain a safe speed and watch for the children at play.

Be a good neighbor - start by getting to know your neighbors and letting them get to know you. Help plant a tree for an elderly or disabled neighbor. Get involved with a nearby school or library. Visit Metro Volunteers online and find a volunteer opportunity that will allow you to feel good while you do good. And thanks, neighbor!
